The foot and ankle are complex anatomical structures that, because of their multiple joints, ligaments and muscles, have many afflictions that can disable them. The amount of stress that can go in the ankle and foot with a fast-paced walk is about four to five times the body weight — an indication of how much stress must be able to withstand and also how disorders in these structures can cause disability.
A board certified and fellowship trained orthopaedic specialist and podiatrist are trained in all aspects of foot and ankle care including arthritis, trauma, bunions, nerve injures, sports and instability conditions, and diabetic foot conditions.

At the VCU Health System we offer high quality orthopaedic care in an academic medical center environment. Our vision is to be the premier orthopaedic provider in the central Virginia region. Our mission is to provide superb clinical care to our patients, education the next generation of orthopaedic surgeons and expand the orthopaedic knowledge base through basic, clinical and translational research.
Our hand and wrist specialists are fellowship trained to treat complex wrist and hand problems. These conditions include traumatic injuries such as fractures or dislocations, soft tissue injuries such as lacerations, and non-traumatic conditions including carpal tunnel and arthritis. All of these conditions can result in significant dysfunction and pain.
Our staff offers an array of conservative treatment options as well as the latest surgical techniques, including the most recently developed small joint replacements.

At our diagnostic center at Stony Point we combine the expertise of surgeons, radiologists and rheumatologists to pinpoint the cause of your joint pain. Significant advances in the nonoperative treatment of joint arthritis have been made, and we offer the most up-to-date techniques, such as home or supervised exercise programs, bracing and shoe modifications, injection therapy, and nutraceuticals. If surgery is eventually required, we offer joint preservation surgeries such as osteotomy, osteochondral grafting and partial joint replacement, which are often less invasive or arthroscopically assisted surgeries associated with faster recovery. Through our active research programs, we stay abreast of all the advances in joint care.

Orthopaedic oncology, or musculoskeletal tumor surgery, is the treatment of both benign (lacking the ability to spread throughout the body) and malignant (able to spread to other organs) tumors of the extremities, pelvis and shoulder girdle. This area includes tumors that originate in the soft tissues and bone (primary) and tumors that have traveled from other organs to bone (metastatic).
We have more than 25 years of experience in treating these rare and complicated conditions in children and adults from across the commonwealth of Virginia. We work closely with hematology/oncology and radiation oncology to provide complete care for our cancer patients. Surgically, we strive whenever possible to pursue limb salvage and to maintain the highest level of function and comfort for individuals with musculoskeletal tumors.
