Specialization

Dr. Ilvy Cotterell specializes in Orthopaedic Hand, Upper Extremity and Microsurgery. Her interests include:

  • Treatment of hand, wrist, and elbow conditions (Carpal tunnel, tendonitis, masses and cysts, trigger finger, arthritis, Dupuytren's contractures, deformities, etc.
  • Nerve conditions and nerve injuries of the upper extremity
  • Arthroscopy of the wrist and elbow
  • Ultrasound evaluation of hte upper extremity
  • Traumatic injuries to tendons, ligaments; dislocations and fractures from the clavicle to the fingertips
  • Reconstruction of shoulder function after nerve damage

  • Developing ways to improve outcomes after tendon repair surgery
  • The VCU Hand Surgery Group is involved in multicenter clinical trials
    • evaluating different ways to surgically treat nerve repairs
    • evaluating outcomes after hand joint replacement surgery
  • Use of Ultrasound in diagnosing and treating compression neuropathies, tendon injuries/tendinopathies
